Welcome to the future of the BMW’s electrified vehicles. BMW Gallery presents the all-electric 2022 i4 Gran Coupe and the 2022 iX crossover. The i brand was introduced when BMW launched the i3 and the i8 back in 2013. Those two products have been improved and updated over time, but this is first time in nearly a decade that all-new products in the i brand have come to market. BMW is on the path to electrifying most of their products with plug-in hybrid capability, such as the X3 30e and 530e amongst others, but the i brand takes things even further. The future of personal transportation is going to be electric, and BMW is getting ahead of the curve with these two exciting products.
The i4 builds upon the 4 Series Gran Coupe with an 84-kWh lithium-ion battery underneath the floor. BMW claims the i4 range will go up to 475km, with the ability to add 164kms in 10 minutes with a Level 3 charger. The i4’s style may be similar to the internal combustion engine version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, but the i4 separates itself with a distinctive grille, a rear diffuser, and if optioned, the Electric Blue exterior colour accents. The i4 and the iX both feature a new curved display. Pairing the centre touchscreen together with the digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. Both these screens create for a new seamless experience with a new software upgrade with iDrive 8. The interface and voice commands have been upgraded to both the i4 and the iX a digital experience that hasn’t been seen before in a BMW.
Where the i4 has some elements of familiarity, the iX totally defies convention. It has roughly the same footprint as the midsize X5, but has an identity unlike anything BMW has made before. The exterior design is bold and built upon a cutting-edge manufacturing process. The iX uses carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) to build its shell and house the battery pack. It is called the Carbon Cage and improves the strength and rigidity of the iX. The iX has 111-kWh battery pack and two electric motors as standard with a range up to 475kms. Similarly, the iX can rapidly charge with Level 3 and add another 120kms of range in 10 minutes. The interior of the BMW iX is a new design philosophy for the brand, and hopefully something that will be shared with other future models. The interior with beautiful minimalism with all-new switchgear and optional glass controls as well as olive-tanned leather surfaces. The iX’s interior is accommodating, intelligent and, above all else, stunning.
